The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part II easily held the top spot on Thursday, and dropped about as expected, off 24% from Wednesday to $10.4 million, for a 2-day tally of $24.2 million. In comparison, Part I was off an identical percentage to $11.1 million, for a $25.7 million 2-day gross. Movies usually rebound significantly on Black Friday. Part II, should it continue to play like Part I or Catching Fire, may earn around $22-22.5 million on Friday. At this time, its 3-day projection remains at $53 million, with the 5-day projection upped a tad to $77 million.
The Good Dinosaur took a hit on Thanksgiving, though that was to be expected as its core audience was obviously staying at home on Turkey Day. Pixar's latest dropped 33% from Wednesday to $6.6 million, for a $16.4 million 2-day pick-up. Look for Dinosaur to rebound on Friday. Recent trajectories include a 169% tick-up for Penguins of Madagascar, 143% for Frozen, 147% for Rise of the Guardians and 144% for Arthur Christmas. These point to a Friday between $16 and $17.5 million for Dinosaur. As of now, the 3-day and 5-day projections of $42.5 million and $59 million remained unchanged.
Creed went up slightly on Thanksgiving, increasing 7% to $6.5 million, and nearly tying Dinosaur for second place. The well-received Rocky continuation is at $12.5 million in two days and is likely to pull in another $12-13 million on Friday. Creed has been adjusted way up to a $30 million 3-day and $43 million 5-day projection.
Spectre also inched up slightly on Thanksgiving, increasing 1% to $2.7 million. In comparison, Skyfall went up 3% on Thanksgiving in 2012. If it plays out like Skyfall it should be set for another $5 million on Friday. The 3-day and 5-day predictions have been increased a little bit to $12 million and $17.5 million, respectively.
The Night Before edged out The Peanuts Movie on Thanksgiving, off just 1% to $1.65 million on Thursday. The projections have been increased to $8 million and $11.3 million for the 3-day and 5-day respectively. Peanuts, with its family audience at home, fell a Top 10-worst 42% to $1.4 million, but it should rebound considerably on Friday. As of now, though, Peanuts's weekend projections have been adjusted down considerably to $8.5 million over the 3-day and $12 million over the four-day, with the animated movie obviously taking a hit from The Good Dinosaur.
As for the rest of the Top 10, Love the Coopers jumped to seventh place on Thursday thanks to the Holiday theme, but it may or may not remain in the list over the weekend. The Secret in Their Eyes and The Martian inched up a tad over Thanksgiving, while Spotlight and Brooklyn both dropped slightly. As of now, all five of these movies remain on track for $3-3.5 million over the 3-day and $4-5 million over the extended 5-day frame.
Meanwhile, Victor Frankenstein fell 23% on Thursday to $470,000, all the way down in 12th place, for a terrible $1.1 million two-day start. It's projections have been revised down to a pitiful $2.5 million 3-day and $3.6 million 4-day.
