Star Trek into Darkness did solid, but unspectacular business on Wednesday night, collecting $3.3 million from evening/midnight shows. That's only a little over one-fifth of Iron Man 3, but it is ahead of Oz the Great and Powerful's midnight showing and was in line with The Great Gatsby's midnight showing. While that wasn't as strong as what tracking may have suggested, the last-minute date change (to one day earlier) may be somewhat the blame for the somewhat lower-than-expected number as some fans may not have known about the change.
Should Darkness follow Oz's trajectory, it would earn in the $25 million range on Thursday and another $30 million on Friday. That would set up for a weekend between $80 and $85 million and a four-day debut upwards of $110 million. But Oz had appeal to family audiences, so that's a bit bullish of a comparison. If it follows a more front-loaded approach, it could very well fall just shy of the century mark for the extended period.
