Weekly News: Diary of a Wimpy Kid 3 Begins Filming, Special Events At D23 Expo Including Two Oddball Pixar Projects....

20th Century Fox has announced that a third Diary of a Wimpy Kid movie has started filming.  Entitled Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days, it will be based on the third and fourth books of the popular series by Jeff Kinney.  Dog Days follows Rodrick Rules, which earned $54 million in the U.S. this year, and the first Wimpy Kid, which grossed $65 million last year.  Rodrick Rules' director David Bowers returns, and Zachary Gordon, Steve Zahn, Robert Capron, Devon Bostick, Rachael Harris, and Peyton R. List are the returning cast.  The newest Wimpy Kid has been set for release on August 3, 2012.

Also this past weekend was the D23 Conference in Anaheim, California, where Disney shed some light on its' upcoming films.  Presentations included Jason Segel, Kermit the Frog, and Miss Piggy showing a few clips from The Muppets (Nov. 23), as well as footage from John Carter of Mars (Mar. 9, 2012) and The Avengers (May 4, 2012, Disney's first project with Marvel).  Also shown were early clips and production stills from Pixar's upcoming films Brave (June 22, 2012) and Monsters University (June 21, 2013).  They also confirmed the two new films Pixar is working on, which they have yet to title, but they will have something to do with Dinosaurs and being taken inside your mind?  I don't quite get it, but knowing Pixar, its' bound to be something worth watching.

Disney also gave a sneak peek of their 52nd animated film Wreck-It Ralph, and showed behind the scenes shots from the upcoming Wizard of Oz prequel, Oz: The Great and Powerful (March 1, 2013).  Other announcements included a logo for Tim Burton's next stop-motion animated film Frankenweenie (Oct. 6, 2012), a sneak peek at DisneyToon Studios' Cars spin-off Planes (set to debut on DVD in Spring 2013), and a new Toy Story short titled "Small Fry", which will debut alongside The Muppets.
