Weekend Box Office Predictions for January 3-5, 2020...

This is the last weekend box office predictions post for awhile...and its' mostly going to be one for holiday season holdovers which will hope to get more business in before schools let back in. Thanks to the strength of Star Wars and Jumanji, overall business should be ahead of this same frame last year.

The only new release is a remake of The Grudge from Sony. While I'm not sure if many asked for a new version of the cult classic, horror flicks have had the tendency to over-perform over the first weekend of January. It certainly helps that there hasn't been any true horror flicks in the marketplace since Doctor Sleep back in November. Current studio projections are high-single digits, but I think this will get into double digits, possibly challenging Little Women and Frozen 2 for third place.

The only movie in the list that will likely drop above 40% is Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker as most fans have come out to see it already. Everything else should hold strongly with break still in session for many through Sunday.

Here's the projected Top 10:

#1: Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker ($39 million, -46%)
#2: Jumanji: The Next Level ($24 million, -32%)
#3 (tie): Little Women ($12 million, -29%)
#3 (tie): The Grudge ($12 million)
#5: Frozen 2 ($11 million, -35%)
#6: Spies in Disguise ($9 million, -33%)
#7: Knives Out ($6.5 million, -34%)
#8: Uncut Gems ($6 million, -38%)
#9 (tie): Bombshell ($3 million, -38%)
#9 (tie): Cats ($3 million, -38%)
