I will have a final box office report for 2018's biggest movies tomorrow. However, 2019 already is showing quite a bit of promise (especially from one studio). In the meantime, here are my Top 10 predicted biggest movies of 2019:
#1: Avengers - Endgame (April 26)
Infinity War ended up with over $2 billion worldwide, it would be shocking if this one at least didn't come within striking distance of its predecessor. Most moviegoers will be wanting to see how things end.
Opening Weekend Prediction: $240 million
Final Domestic Total: $600-650 million
Final Worldwide Total: $1.9 billion
#2: Star Wars - Episode IX (December 20)
While The Last Jedi dropped sharply from The Force Awakens ($1.35 billion vs. over $2 billion), the final episode looks to bring in those curious as to how this trilogy will close out. I expect a slight tick-up from Jedi worldwide, with about the same domestically.
Opening Weekend Prediction: $200 million
Final Domestic Total: $600 million
Final Worldwide Total: $1.4 billion
#3: Frozen 2 (November 22)
The first Frozen movie currently ranks as the highest-grossing animated movie ever at $1.27 billion. Considering how much fanfare there is for the original, I would not be surprised if this came close to that number.
Opening Weekend Prediction: $130 million
Final Domestic Total: $400 million
Final Worldwide Total: $1.2 billion
#4: Jumanji 2 (December 13)
If there's one non-Disney movie that will get into the billion dollar club, this one has the best shot. The first Jumanji fell just short of the $1 billion club, and was very well-liked. I think this sequel will get there with an overseas boost, while falling off a little bit from the first one on the domestic front.
Opening Weekend Prediction: $90 million
Final Domestic Total: $375 million
Final Worldwide Total: $1.15 billion
#5: The Lion King (July 19)
Disney's remake of the 1994 classic is almost a sure bet to get into the $1 billion club. The Jungle Book fell just short, but this one should get enough of a boost to get in there.
Opening Weekend Prediction: $125 million
Final Domestic Total: $450 million
Final Worldwide Total: $1.05 billion
#6: Hobbs and Shaw (August 2)
As a spin-off to Fast and Furious, this one has an outside shot at earning $1 billion (the last two Furious movies did). I'm not sure yet if this one will, but it will still be a big hit otherwise.
Opening Weekend Prediction: $110 million
Final Domestic Total: $300 million
Final Worldwide Total: $900 million
#7: Spider-Man: Far From Home (July 5)
Sony and Marvel's Spidey sequel should also be a big summer hit. Homecoming earned nearly $900 million worldwide, and I expect a similar total here.
Opening Weekend Prediction: $125 million
Final Domestic Total: $325 million
Final Worldwide Total: $900 million
#8: Toy Story 4 (June 21)
I don't expect $1 billion like Toy Story 3 did, only because some filmgoers are skeptical about a fourth movie being made. However, the familiarity of this franchise will still carry it to big numbers.
Opening Weekend Prediction: $90 million
Final Domestic Total: $300 million
Final Worldwide Total: $875 million
#9: The Secret Life of Pets 2 (June 7)
The first Secret Life of Pets earned over $850 million worldwide. I expect the sequel to match that number, though competition later in the month could cause the domestic number to slide a bit.
Opening Weekend Prediction: $90 million
Final Domestic Total: $300 million
Final Worldwide Total: $850 million
#10: Captain Marvel (March 9)
Marvel's first female superhero should be greeted with a warm welcome. Similar to Wonder Woman two years ago, look for another big success here.
Opening Weekend Prediction: $110 million
Final Domestic Total: $300 million
Final Worldwide Total: $800 million
