The holiday movie season is here!!
Spectre earned, as expected, very strong numbers. 007's latest outing pulled in $28 million on Friday, which included $5.3 million from Thursday night preview screenings. That's slightly ahead of Quantum of Solace's $27 million opening day, but short of Skyfall's $33 million opening Friday from 2012. The latest Bond received mixed-to-positive critical reception (62% on Rotten Tomatoes) and an "A-" CinemaScore. I'm going to guess it will have a Friday-Sunday multiple in between both of its predecessors, and earn around $75 million for the weekend.
As for The Peanuts Movie, it managed a $12 million opening day. As far as early-November animated openers are concerned, Peanuts was in line with Megamind ($12.5 million) from 2010. Its also not far off from Wreck-it Ralph ($13.5 million) from 2012. Peanuts has earned great reviews from critics (86% on Rotten Tomatoes) and an "A" CinemaScore. A similar trajectory to Ralph would give the animated adaptation of the classic TV specials/comic strips $44 million for the weekend, though it could get in the high-40's if kids and families really boost it more on Saturday.
The fall leftovers are mostly surprisingly holding their own. The Martian is looking to earn around $9-10 million in its sixth weekend, while Goosebumps and Bridge of Spies are both, based on Friday numbers, expected to clock in around $6 million apiece for the weekend.
