Weekend Box Office Predictions for May 29-31, 2015

Here is the Top 10:

#1: San Andreas ($42 million)
#2: Tomorrowland ($17.5 million, -46%)
#3: Pitch Perfect 2 ($16 million, -47%)
#4: Mad Max: Fury Road ($14 million. -43%)
#5: Aloha ($13.5 million)
#6: Avengers: Age of Ultron ($12 million, -45%)
#7: Poltergeist ($10 million, -56%)
#8: Hot Pursuit ($2 million, -45%)
#9: Far from the Madding Crowd ($1.8 million, -20%)
#10: Furious 7 ($1.3 million, -44%)

Despite a more mixed track record with buzz than pretty much all of May 2015's other releases, San Andreas looks well-positioned to possibly break out. Its another action flick, but its disaster special effects have been enticing moviegoers. 3D and IMAX will help it also. Tomorrowland's disappointing debut last week also will leave more of a door open for it.

Aloha has been tracking under the radar and its marketing has been very light. Also, following the review embargo being lifted today, critics have been slapping it with terrible reviews (its only at 9% on Rotten Tomatoes so far). But Cameron Crowe and its solid starpower (Bradley Cooper, Emma Stone, Rachel McAdams, Alec Baldwin) should help it to get into the low-to-mid teens millions this weekend.

Tomorrowland will hope to stabilize this weekend, but word-of-mouth is only so-so at this point and Memorial Day Weekend openers usually don't hold very well in their second frames. If there's a saving grace, its that San Andreas won't be targeting its family audience, which may allow for a drop below 50%.

As for other holdovers, Mad Max: Fury Road has topped the weekdays following Memorial Day with stellar business, so look for a better-than-expected hold (especially with it playing in some double features with fellow Warner Bros. pic San Andreas). Pitch Perfect 2 and Avengers: Age of Ultron should drop 45-50% each as both new openers look to take some of their audience. Poltergeist, like other horror flicks, will probably see the highest drop of the list.

Far from the Madding Crowd should see the strongest hold as it adds more theaters. Meanwhile, Hot Pursuit will continue to march into obscurity, and the final Spring holdover on this list, Furious 7, will make a ninth-straight week on the list, and will end the weekend just inches away from the $350 million mark.
