This is going to be somewhat brief due to a busy weekend in store for me. But wanted to address a couple of interesting topics.
First, just announced two days ago, Guillermo Del Toro is releasing Pacific Rim 2 on April 7, 2017. This is surprising, as the first Pacific Rim, while having a strong fanbase, wasn't a huge success, earning just over $100 million domestically and $400 million worldwide. Altogether, that's enough to make a few dollars considering its $200 million budget, but not enough to warrant a sequel by all means. Also, Warner Bros. isn't releasing it. Universal (who acquired Legendary Pictures last year) will be. Who knows how they'll market this one? Right now, it seems like April is a safe bet, but this is definitely a head-scratcher.
The other thing I want to address is Steven Spielberg's forthcoming family project, The BFG (Big Friendly Giant). Based on a children's book based on World War II, the film's screenplay is coming from none other than Melissa Matheson, who wrote the screenplay for E.T. almost 35 years ago. With the huge acclaim E.T. has gotten, BFG has quite a hurdle to overcome. Could it be as heartwarming and engaging as that sci-fi classic? Will it become a new classic? Right now, its too early to tell (its releasing on July 1, 2016). Before then, Spielberg has a Cold War thriller starring Tom Hanks releasing in late 2015.
