Overall business should be ahead of last year's terrible start to the Fall movie season...
Riddick is looking well-positioned to top this weekend. The Vin Diesel thriller is a reboot of the Riddick movie series, which its' previous high was 2004's The Chronicles of Riddick, which earned nearly $60 million. Diesel is a draw at the box office, and buzz has been very solid for this installment. Early reviews have been good too. Fall isn't a strong season to release action flicks though, and with the strong amount of action flicks that released during the summer, those disadvantages could limit its' audience. I think the movie will eke out $20 million for the weekend, on its' way to $45-$50 million stateside.
This is the End is also re-expanding into theaters after earning $97 million from its' initial run. The word-of-mouth R-rated comedy hit should pass $100 million upon expanding to 2,000 locations.
The Butler should be second with another solid hold, off 35% to $9.5 million, for a $87 million total. We're The Millers should also hold well, off 30% to $9 million, for a $130 million pick-up. Instructions Not Included should jump up to fourth place due to strong word-of-mouth and expanding to more theaters, and should pick up around $8 million this weekend. One Direction: This is Us should round out the Top 5 with a 60% drop to $6.5 million, for a $27 million total.
