Minions are certainly a force to be reckoned with. Despicable Me 2 earned an estimated $4.7 million from Tuesday night shows, and an incredible $34.3 million estimate from both Tuesday and Wednesday. That is the 3rd biggest opening day ever for an animated film, as its a few million ahead of Monsters University through the same point. Right now, the now surefire animation blockbuster is due for a five-day start between $120 and $150 million.
The Lone Ranger only earned roughly a fourth of the cartoon's thunder. Disney's action Johnny Depp flick earned just $9.7 million on Wednesday, including $2 million from Tuesday night. A five-day gross in the $45 to $55 million range would be very disappointing.
Kevin Hart: Let Me Explain is performing very well, coming in fourth place on Wednesday with a strong estimated $4.7 million from 800 theaters ($1.1 million from Tuesday night). The five-day start may approach $20 million.
