July 2012 Review

July 2012's box office was a bit slower than expected.  Overall gross tallied up $1.314 billion, down 6% from 2011, and down just 0.1% from 2010...

The Colorado shooting tragedy did take its' toll on all the films though, and The Dark Knight Rises was no exception.  It led the month of July with a huge $304 million, which marks the third best 12-day start of all-time, behind The Avengers and the movie's predecessor, The Dark Knight.  The movie will likely close in the $450 million range, enough for seventh place on the all-time chart and enough to consider it a blockbuster, but still, somewhat lower than what the lofty expectations analysts set.

Second was The Amazing Spider-Man, which was able to nail a respectable $244.3 million in its' first 28 days.  While trailing the other three Spider-Man movies significantly, it still is going to finish with a still-potent $260 million domestically, a number that majority of today's superhero films have not even gotten close to.

Third place was the top June holdover, Ted, which tallied an impressive $157.4 million (that isn't a surprise though, since it opened on June 29).  The film is approaching $200 million stateside, and should at least finish with around $215 million stateside.

Winding up in fourth place for the month and third place (not including holdovers) was Ice Age: Continental Drift, which has earned an okay $119.3 million in 19 days.  Heading for a $150 million finish, the fourquel is doing huge business overseas.

Rounding out the Top 5 and second place among June holdovers was Pixar's Brave, which tallied a pretty strong $97.5 million, and is looking for a finish in the $235 million neigborhood.

Savages ($44.6 million) and Katy Perry - Part of Me 3D ($24.4 million) rounded out the Top 5 for July new releases, while Magic Mike ($77.8 million), Madea's Witness Protection ($43.5 million), and Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted ($33.4 million) rounded out the Top 5 for June holdovers.

Overall 2012 box office stands at $6.721 billion so far, up from 2011 and up slightly from 2010.
