Weekend Box Office Report: April 2-4, 2021

-The domestic box office roared more back to life this weekend as Godzilla VS. Kong (despite already being available to stream simultaneously on HBOMax) earned $48.5 million in its first 5 days ($32.2 million over the proper weekend, for a strong $10,509 per-venue average). That's comparable to the $47.7 million three-day start of Godzilla: King of the Monsters from May 2019. But it's also way ahead of the $20-30 million five-day forecast by most analysts. With solid reviews and an "A" CinemaScore, look for the blockbuster to play through April and even into May.

-Meanwhile, Sony's horror flick The Unholy managed a second place start of $3.2 million (modest $1,729 per-venue average). While not a great start, it's also not disastrous given the competition and the pandemic. And with a low budget, it probably won't lose a lot of money in the end either.

-After a solid start last week, Nobody slipped a surprising 55% to third place and $3.1 million. With $11.9 million in 10 days, it's still outpacing many films from the pandemic.

-Raya and the Last Dragon was down 45% in its fifth weekend to $2.1 million, for a $32.2 million pick-up in one month of release, along with $85 million worldwide. While not great numbers, they are still relatively decent all things considered.

-Tom and Jerry is fading faster than anticipated, even with its month-long HBOMax window finished. Warner Bros.' family film was off 44% to $1.4 million in fifth place, for a still pretty good $39.5 million gross in six weeks. It's approaching $100 million worldwide also.

-Debuting in sixth place with surprisingly OK numbers is faith-based film The Girl Who Believes in Miracles. Despite opening in only 640 locations, it's $580,000 opening was enough to get it this high on the list (it averaged $906 per theater).

Here's how the rest of the Top 10 fared:
-The Courier was down 57% to $452,000, for a $4.3 million pick-up in 17 days.
-Chaos Walking plummeted 69% to $380,000, for a $12.2 million pick-up in one month.
-The Croods: A New Age plummeted 62% in its 19th weekend to $210,000, for a $56.3 million gross so far (along with $165 million worldwide).
-French Exit earned $193,000 in its semi-nationwide expansion ($200,000 so far).
