Early Box Office: "The Amazing Spider-Man" Earns $59 Million Over First Two Days of Release...

The Amazing Spider-Man is off to a strong start here in its' debut.  The film set the all-time Tuesday record with $35.8 million, which is nothing short of amazing.  Yes, that is the weakest opening day for a film starring the web-slinger, but you have to take into account that the others either debuted on a Wednesday or Friday.  Also, this particular film set the record for the biggest pre-Independence Day debut ever, ahead of the first Transformers.  The number was helped by a solid $7.5 million gross during midnight shows and $850,000 during Monday night previews in Canada.

On Independence Day Wednesday, the superhero flick was down a surprising 33% to $23.4 million, which normally would mark it front-loaded.  But that kind of drop was expected actually, as is other mid-week openers.  That brings its' two-day total to a strong $59.2 million, already higher than what I was expecting.

The film earned an "A-" CinemaScore from audiences, and has earned positive reviews from critics.  With these trajectories in mind, the film will likely pull in another $17 million on Thursday, before possibly taking in another $66 million over the weekend, for a six-day total of a strong $142 million.

As for holdovers, Ted has been enjoying solid mid-week business, with Monday-Wednesday grosses resulting in $8 million plus, and that could result in a solid hold this coming weekend.  Also, Brave and Madagascar 3 have actually been gaining traction over the week, which could result in great holds for them this weekend as well.

There are no early Thursday numbers yet for Katy Perry - Part of Me 3D, but those numbers will be coming on Saturday morning along with the Friday estimates...
