Overall box office for May is expected to come in at around $1.025 billion, down just 1% from 2011's record-breaking month...
The Avengers easily led the May month with an unbelievable $531.7 million (estimated). Within the next few days, it will pass The Dark Knight's $538 million final gross to claim third place on the all-time domestic list. It is now a lock to close over $600 million domestically and nearly $1.5 billion worldwide.
Men in Black III's solid $81 million first week is enough to rank second for the month. While not as much as what studios were expecting, its' still remarkable that it was able to do strong business even 10 years after its' predecessor.
Dark Shadows slotted in third with an unspectacular $67 million in 20 days. That's the second-lowest collaboration between Tim Burton and Johnny Depp, only ahead of the awards-season worthy Sweeney Todd. The film looks to be on course to closing at around $80 million.
Battleship fared even worse in fourth place, with just $50.5 million in 13 days. It will be lucky to close with $70 million domestic. The Dictator rounded out the Top 5 for May releases, earning a lackluster $46 million in 15 days. The top-grossing April holdover was Think Like A Man, which took sixth place in May grosses with $27.2 million. The Hunger Games and The Lucky One were second and third among holdovers, with $23.8 million and $18.5 million.
Overall box office is currently running 15% ahead of last years' pace, but down 5% from 2010's pace...
