After three down weekends in a row, the box office will surge far past this same weekend last year...
For now, Prometheus debuted at #1 on Friday with a strong estimated $21.4 million. That easily ranks as the biggest Friday gross to date since The Avengers. The Ridley Scott-directed flick was given a "B" CinemaScore, and its' possible that, similar to other sci-fi films, it won't get a Saturday bump. Right now though, with positive critical reception, a $55 million weekend looks about right here.
Well, its' official. The DreamWorks Animation slump is OVER!!! Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted did take second place on Friday, but its estimated $20.5 million Friday was way higher than expectations. Considering the fact that there's been no family movies on the market for the past month, it makes sense why there was such a big number. The animated threequel recieved a glowing "A" CinemaScore, and due to a Saturday bump, it should take the top spot for the weekend and gross a strong $65 million for the weekend.
Snow White and the Huntsman plunged 64% from last Friday to an estimated $7.5 million. And while that's an alarming drop, it was to be expected considering the amount of competition. Look for a $25 million second weekend, bringing its' 10-day total to around $100 million.
Men in Black III eased 48% from last Friday to an estimated $4.2 million, in what should be a $15.5 million third weekend, while The Avengers was down 42% from last Friday to an estimated $3.3 million, which should lead to a $12.5 million sixth weekend.
Weekend estimates to be posted tomorrow afternoon...
