Friday Box Office Report: "Madagascar 3" and "Prometheus" Hold Off Weak Newcomers...

Before I get on with Friday's report, I have a couple of things to say:

Sorry that this is late, I didn't have time yesterday to update...

Also, I'd like to apologize for not having the Weekly Movie Reviews re-start on the days I had scheduled them.  I have lots that are saved as drafts, but I just haven't had the time to get on and post them.  I will post the first of them ASAP, but an official day and time isn't exactly certain as of now...

Overall box office will be down from last year...

Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted easily held the top spot, down 51% from last Friday to an estimated $10 million.  That is exactly the same as Kung Fu Panda's second Friday, which would result in a $33.7 million weekend, though that was in the face of a movie taking the #1 spot from it.  The Father's Day Weekend usually results in a strong Sunday gross, and with no strong competition, I wouldn't be surprised if Madagascar 3's weekend gross reached $36 million.

Prometheus held the second spot, but didn't hold well at all, cascading 73% from last Friday to an estimated $5.8 million.  That's typical for sci-fi fare, but it is alarming considering that it was hoped to start a franchise.  Ridley Scott's latest will likely hit about $18 million for the weekend.

Rock of Ages debuted in third with barely noticeable numbers.  Expected to earn in the mid-to-high 20's for the weekend, the film was only able to muster an estimated $5.4 million on its' opening Friday.  That's nowhere near Mamma Mia! or Hairspray's opening Friday, and if anything, its' more closer to Burlesque than any other similar film.  Look for a $15 million debut.

But it was Adam Sandler that had the worst news of the weekend.  That's My Boy debuted with a thud, just an estimated $4.3 million in fourth place.  That makes Jack & Jill look like a success, which had earned more than twice that number on its' opening Friday.  Look for the R-rated comedy to rack up $13 million for the weekend.

Rounding out the Top 5 is Snow White and the Huntsman, which eased 47% from last Friday to an estimated $4 million, in what should be a $13 million third weekend, a much stronger hold than last frame.
