Box office will still get nowhere near last year's record-breaking frame...
Men in Black III got off to a good start on Friday, rebounding from a slightly underwhelming $1.6 million midnight to earning an estimated $18 million from 4,248 locations. Considering the fact that its' been 10 years since Men in Black II, this is actually a very strong number. Critics gave it generally positive reviews and audiences liked it, giving it a "B+" CinemaScore. The sci-fi comedy should earn $62 million for the three-day weekend and $77 million for the four-day frame.
The other new release, Chernobyl Diaries, got off to a pretty good start, earning an estimated $3.5 million from 2,433 haunted houses. That's about average for a horror flick, but with audiences hating it ("D+" CinemaScore), who knows how well it will do over the weekend? Look for $9.5 million in the three-day period and $12 million over the extended weekend.
The Avengers bagged another estimated $9.5 million (down 44%) over its' fourth Friday, in what is looking to be a $35 million three-day and a $43 million four-day. Battleship sank 64% to an estimated $3 million in its' second Friday, but should still earn $11 million for the three-day and $14 million for the extended frame. The Dictator dropped 54% from last Friday to an estimated $2.6 million, in what looks to be a $9 million three-day and $11.5 million four-day.
