While the box office won't be up from last year, it looks like things could be getting back on track for the summer...
Men in Black III debuted to $1.55 million at midnight last night. That's a pretty solid number, but somewhat unspectacular given that similar films have debuted much higher. Still though, its three times as much as what Dark Shadows earned at midnight two weeks ago and nearly four times as much as what Battleship earned at midnight last weekend.
The best comparison for this film is Clash of the Titans, which debuted to $1.45 million on its' midnight shows, on its' way to a $61 million weekend. Since this is a holiday weekend, MIB3 should be on its' way to close to $65 million for the three-day and around $80 million for the four-day frame, a super start for a movie debuting on this particular weekend.
Chernobyl Diaries opened to a solid $550,000 at midnight shows, which although was just over a quarter of The Devil Inside's $2 million midnight showings, its' still notable in the face of Men in Black III. As of now, the film is looking at a four-day debut in the mid-teens millions.
