Weekend Box Office Predictions for March 23-25, 2012

This weekend looks to have the first major blockbuster of the year, and overall box office will surge from last year...

Here is the projected Top 10:

#1: The Hunger Games

Its' the next sensation that has teens, young adults, and even older kids highly anticipating for the midnight opening on Friday for this novel adaptation.  With Harry Potter already concluded and Twilight set to close its' book this November, its' very likely based on the overwhelmingly strong buzz that this will take those two monster franchise's places on top.  The film was originally expected to open in the high-60's millions, very similar to the first Twilight, but since then, buzz and sold-out shows at over 2,000 theaters already has analysts upping their predictions to as much as $150 million, WOW!!  Does this even give Hunger Games a chance at beating the all-time opening weekend record set by the last Potter film?  I don't think so, since its' not opening in the summer or around Thanksgiving like the other two franchises are famous for.  Surprisingly, critics have been positive towards this, but competition over the next couple of weeks from Wrath of the Titans and Titanic's 3D re-release certainly won't help it show good legs (most fans will rush out to see it on opening weekend anyway).  With that
in mind, expect Iron Man 2-like numbers, enough to top the March
record set by 2010's Alice in Wonderland ($116.1 million).

                                                            Weekend Prediction: $126 million
                                                            Estimated Final Gross: $300 million

#2: 21 Jump Street

The action comedy will drop with competition around, but, its' still done strong weekday business...

Weekend Prediction: $18.5 million (-49%)
Estimated 10-Day Total: $69 million

#3: Dr. Suess' The Lorax

Still the only family movie in town, so it shouldn't get affected by The Hunger Games, but it should hold on par with last weekend...

Weekend Prediction: $14 million (-39%)
Estimated 24-Day Total: $178.5 million

#4: John Carter

The only reason why this is still in the Top 5 is that the remaining holdovers are $2 million or less this weekend, but there's no way that this movie will be able to avoid disappointment at this point...

Weekend Prediction: $7.5 million (-52%)
Estimated 17-Day Total: $65 million

#5: A Thousand Words

I see this jumping ahead of Project X this weekend due to not being affected by Hunger Games...

Weekend Prediction: $2 million (-46%)
Estimated 17-Day Total: $15 million

#6: Project X

If there's any movie that will be affected by Hunger Games, its' this due to audience...

Weekend Prediction: $1.8 million (-55%)
Estimated 24-Day Total: $52 million

#7: Act of Valor

The army film has held its' ground, but it looks like it won't be in the safe zone for long...

Weekend Prediction: $1.7 million (-54%)
Estimated 31-Day Total: $65 million

#8: Journey 2: The Mysterious Island

With no additional competition for families, this should stay in the Top 10 once more...

Weekend Prediction: $1.6 million (-33%)
Estimated 52-Day Total: $97.5 million

#9: Safe House

It won't be safe for much longer, as more competition continues to drive it into the ground...

Weekend Prediction: $1.5 million (-48%)
Estimated 52-Day Total: $122.5 million

#10: Casa de mi Padre

The Will Ferrell spanish flick is doing well in the limited releases venture, at least it will stick around, for now...

Weekend Prediction: $1.3 million (-44%)
Estimated 10-Day Total: $4 million
