Friday Box Office Report: "Jump Street" Out-Guns "Lorax"....

Box office is looking to be up again from last year...

21 Jump Street continued the trend of box office hits, with a solid estimated $13 million on Friday.  That was the biggest opening for an R-rated comedy since Bad Teacher, which earned similar numbers on its' debut Friday.  The film earned surprisingly critical acclaim and even though no CinemaScore is available as of now, the film should easily win the weekend with around $36 million.

Even though it won't hold the top spot again, The Lorax still showed strength in its' third weekend, down just 26% from last Friday to an estimated $7 million.  That is mostly benefited from some kids being out on Spring Break this past week.  The animated hit should be able to get a boost on Saturday and go on to gross nearly $30 million for its' third weekend.

John Carter, unfortunately, wasn't very lucky.  Down 60% from last Friday, the sci-fi disappointment earned an estimated $4 million on Friday, despite sliding to third.  Right now, the film is headed for a $15 million weekend.

Project X also dropped hard, but due to more competition.  The teenage party flick dropped 55% to an estimated $1.5 million, and will be lucky to reach $5 million for the weekend.  Surprisingly, rounding out the Top 5 is Eddie Murphy's comedy A Thousand Words, up a spot from last week and actually holding pretty well, down 42% from last Friday to an estimated $1.1 million, in what should be a weekend between $3.5 and $4 million.
