Box office is looking to be up from last year...
The Hunger Games held onto the top spot, as expected, but didn't hold as well as what its' "A" CinemaScore suggested. The book adaptation earned an estimate between $19.5 million and $20 million, down a hefty 72% from last Friday. It's not entirely unexpected that it dropped a heavy amount, since most of the fans already rushed out to see it last weekend. Based on recent trajectories, the film is headed for a $56 million second weekend.
Debuting in second place, Wrath of the Titans didn't live up to its' predecessor, due to negative word-of-mouth resulting from the first one. The action sequel earned an estimate between $11.5 million and $12.5 million, which isn't strong by any means. However, the film should be able to do huge results overseas as it opens in most international territories this weekend as well. Look for a $36 million weekend, in line with expectations.
Third place went to Mirror Mirror. The family adventure and the first of two Snow White adaptations this year earned an estimate between $6 and $7 million on Friday, which is actually pretty solid considering the middling tracking numbers that it had. Plus, it will be able to take advantage of over 65% of kids being on Spring Break next weekend. Based on recent comparisons, expect around $23 million for the weekend.
21 Jump Street and Dr. Suess' The Lorax rounded out the Top 5 with good holds. The action comedy is expected to earn an estimated $4.5 million on Friday, down just 25% from last Friday and what should be a $14 million weekend. The animated hit continued to hold well with a 34% ease from last Friday to a projected estimate of around $2 million, in what is expected to be a $8 million weekend.
Weekend estimates to be posted tomorrow afternoon...
