A very strong week with great numbers from all four new releases...
With the strongest seven-day performance of any film this year so far, The Vow got off to a huge $61.9 million seven-day start, following its' $41.2 million weekend. Its' shown exceptional weekend business, though that was boosted by the fact it grossed $11.6 million on Valentine's Day Tuesday (setting a record for the highest-gross for a movie on a mid-week Valentine's Day). The film is still leading Twitter and Fandango in buzz and sales, so it could do exceptionally this weekend as well.
But there was more than that. Safe House got off to a strong second place start of a huge $54.3 million after its' $40.1 million weekend. Yes, that was boosted by a $6.1 million Valentine's Day gross, but it was close to American Gangster through the same point. The film's chances at holding well are questionable with Ghost Rider 2 in theaters now.
Journey 2: The Mysterious Island was also monumental, with a solid $33.1 million in its' first seven days after its' $27.3 million weekend. Family films don't tend to see strong weekday business, but it is set to do exceptionally this weekend as schools being closed on Monday will boost business.
Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace (3D) took the fourth spot with a good $25.9 million after its' $22.5 million opening weekend. Its' weekday business hasn't been strong, but it was slightly higher than Beauty and the Beast's 3D re-release seven-day start (though that film benefited from a 4-day weekend). Its' chances at holding well this weekend are favorable as family-oriented films do fare well over four-day weekends.
Chronicle rounded out the Top 5 after topping last week, with a decent 44% week-to-week drop to $15.6 million, for a $43.5 million gross in 14 days. Its' still tracking ahead of expectations, but it will probably not see a good hold this weekend with more competition.
The Woman in Black ($13.5 million, -47%), The Grey ($7.2 million, -43%), Big Miracle ($5.1 million, -45%), The Descendants ($4.9 million, -23%), and Underworld: Awakening ($3.8 million, -50%) round out the Top 10...
