Weekly Box Office Report For January 20-26, 2012

Underworld: Awakening led the box office with strong numbers in its' first week.  Tallying $32.6 million in its' first seven days after its' $25.3 million weekend, thats' about $600,000 behind Evolution through the same point, indicating that its' seeing stronger weekday business and it held relatively well throughout the week.  But, regardless, its' still in for a steep drop this weekend, as horror films are very front-loaded.

Red Tails also got off to a solid start in second place, with a much better than expected $23.4 million over its' first seven days after its' $18.7 million weekend.  Its' seen modest weekday business, but its' questionable based on the new competition now in theaters how well it will hold despite its' "A" CinemaScore grade.

With all the competition, despite slipping to third place, Mark Wahlberg's Contraband held OK, with a 53% week-to-week drop to $16 million following its' $12 million weekend, and has earned $49.9 million in 14 days.  With more competition in theaters today, its' hard to imagine this film holding well this time around.

With a Best Picture nomination at the Oscars, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close actually saw business pick up over the week, with a mild $13.3 million gross in its' first seven days after its' $10 million weekend, for a total of roughly $14 million since its' limited opening a month ago.  The film is due for a strong hold this weekend based on Oscar buzz.

Haywire edged out Beauty and the Beast (3D) to round out the Top 5 with a seven-day start of $11.3 million following its' $8.4 million weekend.  The Gina Carano film is set to lose at least half its' business this weekend since it was panned by audiences ("D+" CinemaScore grade).  Disney's re-release of the animated classic collapsed 56% week-to-week to roughly $11 million, for a $35.8 million tally in 14 days and chances are more favorable for this to hold well this weekend.

Joyful Noise ($7.7 million, -52%), Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol ($7.3 million, -56%), Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows ($5.9 million, -51%), and The Iron Lady ($5.4 million, -35%) round out the Top 10.
