In three days from now, Disney enters a new era. The streaming era. With the Mouse House set to launch Disney+, there's plenty of things to look forward to and think about. Of course, with all the content coming, you'll be wondering if you have time to see everything. And also, with other streaming services (AppleTV+, HBOMax and Peacock) all competing for audiences in the next year, what will this service has that makes it stand out?
Looking at what Disney+ has coming up, here are 5 original things I am really excited about - these are not ranked. (Please note these include things that are debuting at launch, not ones coming in the distant future)
The World According to Jeff Goldblum
With Disney's acquisition of 20th Century Fox means they get the majority stake in National Geographic. And the studio's main attraction in Disney+ will be this show starring the Jurassic Park actor. Goldblum's unique, somewhat droll, sarcastic and eccentric persona will make for a very fascinating program. It's definitely one that I will tune in to watch on the service.
The Imagineering Story
From Leslie Iwerks, this series will discuss the history of the Disney Imagineering program and how they came up with the ideas for theme park attractions, shows, and other interesting things the Mouse House has come up with over the years. For a behind-the-scenes buff like me, this is a concept I'm definitely excited to watch based on the trailer and ideas (not to mention some historical aspects regarding Walt himself).
Pixar in Real Life
This unique series takes characters from Pixar favorites and places them in the real world for unique situations. Unlike many live-action reboots the Disney company has done, this takes a more unscripted approach that looks very exciting. This is another series that I'm definitely excited to tune into when it debuts!
The Mandalorian
Disney+'s most anticipated series is definitely no joke. This series set in the Star Wars universe has Jon Favreau at the head (Iron Man, remakes of The Lion King and The Jungle Book), an impressive first trailer under its belt, and the typical shroud of mystery that surrounds most SW projects. How will it connect to previous and future films? That's a question I'm curious to answer when it launches.
Noelle
It's so rare we get a Christmas movie these days. Well Anna Kendrick and Bill Hader have you covered with this new twisty Christmas treat debuting at launch. The teaser trailer really impressed me with an old-school holiday vibe not too far from The Santa Clause movies. I'm definitely looking forward to watching this over the Christmas season a few times.
There's definitely other things to look forward to as well. The remake of Lady and the Tramp looks pawsitively (pun intended) charming, while High School Musical: The Musical: The Series looks like an original take on the classic movies. As far as the future goes, there's plenty of stuff to come that will tickle my nostalgia and curiosity bones. But one thing's for sure, at least there will be a handful of reasons to subscribe and tune in.
Look for reviews of some Disney+ content over the next few weeks!
