Weekend Box Office Predictions for August 5-7, 2016

This weekend is set to be a very strong one, and way ahead of last year. I do need to apologize for not keeping up with this the last couple weeks, I've been incredibly busy with road trips and midterm exams for summer classes. I am hoping things will return to normal this weekend for the blog.

Here is the predicted Top 10:

#1: Suicide Squad ($128 million)
#2: Jason Bourne ($27 million, -54%)
#3: Bad Moms ($14 million, -41%)
#4: Star Trek Beyond ($12 million, -50%)
#5: The Secret Life of Pets ($11.5 million, -39%)
#6: Nine Lives ($8.5 million)
#7: Ice Age: Collision Course ($6 million, -46%)
#8: Lights Out ($5.5 million, -49%)
#9: Nerve ($5 million, -47%)
      Ghostbusters ($5 million, -51%)

Suicide Squad is looking for an impressive debut this weekend, thanks to months of strong buzz and anticipation. Warner Bros.' second installment of their DC Universe, however, has been struggling with bad reviews (27% on Rotten Tomatoes), similar to that of their March hit (but critical disappointment) Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice. If anything, the bad reviews will affect holding power, and won't affect opening weekend nearly as much. We'll see how things pan out. Right now, analysts had been projecting a debut in line with Deadpool, which earned $147 million over four days. A PG-13 rating should help it reach a wider audience though, right? Hmm...confusing.

Speaking of confusing, family movies have overpopulated the summer marketplace once again. And this time, its Kevin Spacey's feline flick Nine Lives that comes to town. Despite boasting Jennifer Garner as a co-lead as well, Lives hasn't generated any sort of excitement or buzz among family audiences. And competition won't help either.

Just about all holdovers will likely take a dip from last week with Squad dominating everyone's attention. The only exceptions might be female-driven films such as Bad Moms. Animated/family movies might also not be affected as much, as Nine Lives isn't expected to bring in much.
