Overall box office will be far ahead of this same weekend last year...
Pixar is back baby! Inside Out delivered their second-biggest opening day ever with a stunning $34.2 million. The only Pixar movie to earn more on its first Friday was Toy Story 3 ($41.5 million). For animated films alone on opening day, Inside Out ranked third behind Toy Story 3 and Shrek the Third ($38 million). The fact that this was able to take #1 from a record-smasher for the day alone is a testament to the popularity of Pixar, and that there hasn't been anything on the animation front since Home came out three months ago. Pixar movies can be a tad frontloaded over their opening weekends. With a Father's Day bump included, Inside Out should be on its way to a wow-worthy $93 million opening weekend, the fourth-biggest 3-day weekend opening for an animated film behind the two I mentioned and Shrek 2.
Jurassic World fell 65% from its opening Friday to $29 million. But it continues to shatter records, reaching $300 million in record time (7 days). In comparison, The Avengers earned $29.2 million in its second Friday on its way to a record $103 million second weekend. However, that was a weekend when kids were still in school, allowing for a stronger Saturday jump. With kids out, don't expect Jurassic to have as strong of a multiple over the weekend (though Father's Day will close some of the gap). Look for a strong second weekend of $98 million, which will be enough to keep the #1 spot for a second-straight weekend.
Besides that, Spy is headed for a $10 million third weekend, while Dope opened to $2.3 million (for a $6.5-7 million opening). Rounding out the Top 5 was San Andreas, which is headed for also around $7 million.
