Top 10 Biggest-Grossing Movies of 2014

2014 was an interesting year for movies, but overall grosses fell behind 2013 and 2012.

Here are the Top 10 biggest movies in the U.S. from 2014: (please note that by 12/31, The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies would not have made it past #10's gross, but is likely to move up to the #3 spot before the end of its run)

#2: Guardians of the Galaxy ($772 million)
#3: Maleficent ($757 million)
#4: X-Men: Days of Future Past ($746 million)
#5: Captain America: The Winter Soldier ($714 million)
#6: The Amazing Spider-Man 2 ($708.9 million)
#7: Dawn of the Planet of the Apes ($708.3 million)
#8: The Hunger Games - Mockingjay: Part I ($671.9 million [so far])
#9: Interstellar ($648 million)
#10: How To Train Your Dragon 2 ($618 million)

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies will likely move into the Top 10 by the end of next weekend.

And here are how the major studios finished 2014 in terms of domestic ticket sales:

#1: 20th Century Fox ($1.769 billion)
#2: Disney ($1.595 billion)
#3: Warner Bros. ($1.539 billion)
#4: Sony/Columbia ($1.248 billion)
#5: Universal ($1.098 billion)
#6: Paramount ($1.044 billion)
#7: Lionsgate ($730 million)
#8: The Weinstein Company ($214.6 million)

Overall business is expected to finish at $10.35 billion for the year, down 5% from 2013, down 4% from 2012, but up 2% from the abysmal 2011. Overall though, with inflation accounted for, it is the ticket sales that suffer. Overall tickets sold is at its lowest number since 1995.
