Movie Review: "Kirk Cameron's Saving Christmas"

Saving Christmas poster.jpg

How do we compare the things of Christmas to WHO it is really supposed to be about?

That's the question that Kirk Cameron so boldly tries to answer. During a Christmas party with his family and friends, his brother-in-law Christian (played by Darren Doane) is starting to feel...scroogish? Maybe. He's just not convinced that everything in his house is about Jesus. Will Kirk be able to get him out of the blue?

It isn't a movie-type movie per se, Saving Christmas is actually a documentary primarily. But, for all its worth, its production values are decent (though far from really good). We get a few decently-done backstories. Cameron's narration is wisely put there for helping in understanding things. And some of the humor is well-timed, especially from comic relief D'Andre.

The biggest positive point I can give to this movie is its emphasis on the true meaning of Christmas, something hardly ever seen in the movies anymore. Cameron does a terrific job with his message that materialism may not be quite as bad as some may think it to be. Some bits and pieces of his message may vex some, but there were some aspects to it that made me go, "Hey, I never thought of it that way before".

On the downside, some of the movie can get a little much on the silly side (though I enjoyed the dance/rap/music ending). And, like I said earlier, some of the production values are more of a direct-to-DVD level.

That being said, though, its hard to lobby complaints against a movie that has the right message at the right time. Despite being far from the best Christmas movie ever made, Kirk Cameron definitely has crafted something that is both equal parts insightful and entertaining.
