Weekend Box Office Report: "Guardians" Tops Slowest Frame in 6 Years...

Overall business was down 25% from last year when Riddick opened at #1 with $19 million...at $52 million for the Top 10, this is the lowest-grossing weekend on record since the post-Labor Day Weekend in 2008.

The five Guardians, sporting various weapons, arrayed in front of a backdrop of a planet in space. Not surprisingly, Guardians of the Galaxy held onto the box office throne. For the first time since The Hunger Games, a movie has ruled the roost for four weekends (though it is non-consecutive here). The latest Marvel pic was down a reasonable 41% to $10.2 million, for a huge $294.6 million gross in 37 days of release. The film will pass $300 million next week, and is now the biggest movie ever released in the month of August, passing The Secret Sense.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles held the second spot for the third-straight weekend, and was off 46% to $6.5 million, In one month of release, the action flick has earned a superb $174.6 million on its way to just under $200 million. If I Stay held well in its third round, off 38% to $5.75 million, for a solid $39.7 million pick-up in 17 days. The Chloe Grace Moretz flick could reach $50 million, which would be a solid result for a movie of its genre.

Lets be Cops held solid as well, off 35% to $5.4 million, for a 26-day tally of a strong $66.6 million. The November Man jumped up a spot to fifth, but it didn't hold as well, off 47% to $4.2 million, for a $17.9 million gross in 12 days. The Pierce Prosnan thriller will likely close at just around $25 million. Meanwhile, As Above, So Below fell 57% to $3.7 million, which isn't surprising considering its genre. The horror flick has $15.6 million in 10 days and will probably not go much further than $20 million.

When The Game Stands Tall didn't hold like God's Not Dead but was off a decent 39% to $3.7 million, and has earned $23.7 million in 17 days and should get to $30 million. The Giver continued to hold extremely well, down just 32% to $3.6 million, and has earned $37.8 million in 24 days. The Hundred-Foot Journey also continued to play very well, off 33% to $3.2 million, for a strong $45.7 million gross in one month of release, or over 4 times its opening weekend.

Bouncing back into the Top 10, Scarlett Johannson's Lucy was just off 29% from Labor Day Weekend to $1.95 million. The breakout action hit has earned $121.2 million in 49 days, and has earned about $300 million worldwide so far.

Opening in 11th place, The Identical opened to a dismal $1.9 million, averaging just under $1,000 from nearly 2,000 locations. That's ahead of Grace Unplugged and The Ultimate Life from last year but nowhere near recent faith-based films. Look for this one to fade pretty fast and close with around $4 million or so.

That's about it. The review for Guardians of the Galaxy will be up by the end of tonight, and I should be back to Weekend Predictions and Weekly Blogging this week. Next weekend brings Dolphin Tale 2 and No Good Deed in what might turn out to be a tight race for #1.
