Can any of the three new openers unseat the Turtles? It should be another strong weekend at the box office.
Here is the predicted Top 10:
#1: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles ($29 million, -56%)
#2: The Expendables 3 ($26 million)
#3: Guardians of the Galaxy ($21 million, -50%)
#4: Lets Be Cops ($16.5 million [$25 million 5-day])
#5: The Giver ($15 million)
#6: Into the Storm ($8.5 million, -52%)
#7: The Hundred-Foot Journey ($7 million, -37%)
#8: Lucy ($5 million, -47%)
#9: Step Up All In ($3 million, -54%)
Hercules ($3 million, -47%)
The Expendables 3 has been leaked online and been downloaded nearly 2 million times, which will affect ticket sales, but not too much. The marketing has been near extreme for the flick, and the addition of famous stars such as Wesley Snipes and Antonio Banderas should bring in some extra audience. The PG-13 rating (unlike the R rating for the other two) will help with the audience as well. Look for an opening near the previous installment.
Lets' Be Cops earned a decent $8.5 million in its first two days, which is solid but unspectacular. Based on this, the small-budget flick is headed for a high-teens millions debut. Meanwhile, The Giver is based on a famous book by Lois Lowery, and should avoid the bomb territory of previous YA films like The Mortal Instruments and Beautiful Creatures. However, don't look for anywhere close to Divergent. Mid-teens is also likely here.
All holdovers will probably drop significantly, with the exception of The Hundred-Foot Journey. With mixed word-of-mouth, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles will have a hefty drop for a family film, but considering the tracking of the other three movies, it should only be the third film of the summer to hold the top spot for two weeks. Guardians of the Galaxy will drop a bit less but won't exactly keep some audience away from Expendables.
Into the Storm, Lucy and Hercules won't be done any favors either with the competition. Finally, Step Up All In will probably lose a lot of its core audience this weekend as well as it will finish as the franchise's lowest-grossing pic.
