Overall box office should be ahead of this same weekend last year...
Bad Grandpa actually had a solid debut on Friday, despite only being a spin-off of a popular franchise. The R-rated pointless movie debuted to a strong estimated $12.6 million on Friday, which includes $1.4 million from Thursday night/midnight grosses. That's off from the 3D installment ($22 million), but ahead of the first two movies. A "B" CinemaScore and solid reviews should help this get to a $30 million weekend...
The Counselor didn't have a similar fate, instead, it was only able to pull in an estimated $3.2 million in fourth place, in what will likely be a $8.5 million weekend, way off from expectations. The Ridley Scott movie just isn't taking advantage of its starpower.
After topping for three weeks in a row, Gravity fell to second place, but it continued holding on strong. The sci-fi thriller was off 32% to an estimated $6.2 million, in what should be a $20.5 million fourth weekend. Captain Phillips also held well, off 30% to an estimated $3.6 million, and should wind up with $11.5 million for the weekend, a strong hold.
Carrie rounded out the Top 5 on Friday and fell 70% to an estimated $1.9 million, in what will likely be a $6 million frame...it will likely be passed by Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2, which added an estimated $1.6 million for what should be a $6.5 million frame...
Weekend estimates to be posted tomorrow...
