Christmas Box Office Update #2: "Miserables", "Django" and "Parental" Drop on Wednesday, "Hobbit" Increases Slightly....

Les Miserables narrowly kept the top spot on Wednesday, but saw its' gross dip 33% to $12.2 million, for a two-day tally of a strong $30.3 million.  Expect the gross to have a much less dip on Thursday before rebounding on Friday.  The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey increased less than 1% to an estimated $11.4 million, jumping into the second spot ($179.7 million gross in 13 days).  Django Unchained dropped 33% to $10 million and third place, for a solid $25 million tally in two days, while Parental Guidance was off 31% to an $4.3 million, for a pretty solid $10.6 million gross in two days.  For the weekend, I now think the grosses will be a bit lower than I had anticipated, with Hobbit and Miserables earning in the low-to-mid 30's millions each for the weekend (Hobbit could earn more if it gets a family bump), Django now looks like it probably won't reach $30 million, and Parental Guidance will probably fall short of $20 million now.

The other movies were a mixed bag.  Jack Reacher was off 28% to an estimated $3.8 million ($27.4 million gross in six days), while This is 40 was down 24% to $3.3 million ($20.8 million gross in six days).  Lincoln jumped ahead of The Guilt Trip to take seventh place, and was down just 8% to $2.1 million ($122.4 million gross in 48 days), while Trip was down an alarming 36% to an estimated $1.7 million ($12.8 million gross in nine days).  The only other movies to pick up were family flicks, Disney/Pixar's 3D re-release of Monsters Inc. was up 13% to $1.65 million ($10.2 million gross in nine days).  DreamWorks Animation's Rise of the Guardians doesn't appear to be affected by Christmas' passing, as its' gross rose 19% to an estimated $1.4 million ($83.9 million gross in 36 days) and went up to 10th place.

Outside the Top 10, Skyfall was off a scant 1% to an estimated $1.3 million ($283.7 million gross in 48 days).  Life of Pi was off a light 15% to $1.1 million ($79.8 million gross in 36 days).  The Silver Linings Playbook declined 20% to $901,000 ($22.3 million gross in 41 days) and Cirque Du Soleil: Worlds Away was off a bad 36% to an estimated $650,000 ($4.3 million gross in six days).
