Weekly Box Office Report for January 27-February 2, 2012

Liam Neeson's The Grey debuted at the top spot with a much higher-than-expected $25.3 million in its' first seven days after its' $19.7 million opening weekend.  That marked the fourth January release this year that earned $25 million or higher for its' first seven days.  Its' shown weaker weekday business than Neeson's last two flicks, which indicates the mixed audience reception.  Due to the Super Bowl, the film isn't set for a good hold this weekend.

Underworld: Awakening posted a solid hold in second, with a 51% week-to-week drop to $16.1 million following its' $12.4 million second weekend, and its' $48.7 million tally in 21 days.  Its' currently running ahead of Evolution through the same point, but that could change as its' drop could be brutal as it has The Woman in Black to deal with this weekend.

Katherine Heigl's One for the Money started off decently in third place with $14.4 million over its' first seven days after its' $11.5 million opening weekend.  Its' shown some modest weekday business, and could see a strong hold over the weekend as there isn't much competition for the female audience.

George Lucas war drama Red Tails held OK in fourth, with a 45% week-to-week drop to $12.9 million following its' $10.4 million second weekend.  Its' questionable how well it will sustain this weekend, since the Super Bowl and more competition will be in its' way.

Rounding out the Top 5 is Sam Worthington's Man on a Ledge, which got off to a underwhelming start with $10.3 million following its' $8 million debut, which is below expectations.  While it had primarily positive audience reception, the disadvantage of the Super Bowl being on Sunday could cause it to drop hard this weekend.

Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close ($8.9 million, -33%), Contraband ($8.7 million, -45%), The Descendants ($8.6 million seven-day start), Beauty and the Beast (3D) ($6.5 million, -41%), and Haywire ($5.4 million, -52%) rounded out the Top 10.
