(NOTE: This is a new series of posts that I will post on most weeks, but not every week. The "Weekly Box Office Report" will showcase how well the films did over the week (combined with last weekend))
The Devil Inside was tops for the week, with $38.3 million over its' first seven days after a strong $33.7 million opening weekend. The daily gross has been going down every day ($1.4 million Monday VS. $860,000 Thursday), dropping to second place on Tuesday and later fourth place on Thursday. That indicates the films' negative word-of-mouth, and isn't a good sign heading into the weekend.
Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol is continuing to show great strength. The film collected $25.5 million over its' fourth week after its' $19.9 million gross last weekend, and down 45% from last week. The film was in the top spot from Tuesday through Thursday, and bumped from $1.2 million on Monday to $1.7 million on Tuesday. The films' cumulative 28-day gross is at $175 million and will reach the Top 10 list for 2011 today. It also gives it a strong chance at beating Devil this weekend.
Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows is also showing good legs, with $18.2 million over its' fourth week after a $13.7 million gross last weekend and down 45% from last week. It took back the second position on Wednesday and Thursday and its' 28-day gross is at $161 million and this also bodes well for a solid performance over this coming weekend.
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo continued to work wonders with just a 37% week-to-week decline with $15.6 million over the week following an $11.4 million gross last weekend. With the Golden Globes on Sunday, the $100 million mark is now just about guaranteed as its' 23-day gross is at $81 million and is also set for a strong hold over the weekend.
Over the seven-day period, War Horse jumped past Alvin & The Chipmunks: Chipwrecked to round out the Top 5, with a 46% week-to-week drop to $11.9 million after its' $8.6 million gross last weekend. Steven Spielberg's war drama has collected $60.2 million in 18 days and is hoping to hold well as it has earned a Best Picture nomination at the Golden Globes on Sunday. With kids in school, Alvin didn't show strong weekday business with around $300,000 each day and ranked as low as ninth place during the week. The threequel ended up falling 58% week-to-week with $10.9 million following its' $9.5 million performance last weekend, and has grossed $113 million in 28 days. It is questionable how it will hold this weekend with Beauty and the Beast now playing in 3D theaters.
We Bought A Zoo ($10.4 million, -50%), The Adventures of Tintin ($8.4 million, -56%), Tinker, Tailor, Solider, Spy ($7.3 million), and New Years Eve ($3.9 million, -57%) rounded out the Top 10.
(NOTE: The Darkest Hour finished just $11,000 behind New Year's with $3.9 million, -41%).
