Weekend Box Office Predictions for December 29-31, 2011

There are no new movies releasing this weekend, as usually the holdover films either replicate or do better business than last weekend as kids and adults are off school this last weekend of the year...

The top spot is likely to once again be held by Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol, which is seeing positive-word-of-mouth, so a $28 million second weekend is expected, which would give it a strong $130 million or more in 12 days.

War Horse, which got off to a strong $7.5 million start on Christmas Day, is looking to climb up to second place for the weekend, with perhaps around $22 million for its' first three-day frame, for a seven-day take of $54 million.

Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows will likely drop a smidge from last frame, with perhaps around $18.5 million, for a strong tally close to $150 million in 17 days.  Alvin & The Chipmunks: Chipwrecked will likely see a bump from family audiences, to around $14 million, for a $98 million tally in the same amount of time.  Both will have made up some ground, but nowhere near their predecessors.

The Darkest Hour only got off to a $3 million start on Christmas Day, and should be able to tally about $8 million for its' debut three-day weekend.

Here is the projected Top 10:

#1: Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol ($27.7 million)
#2: War Horse ($22.3 million)
#3: Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows ($18.4 million)
#4: Alvin & The Chipmunks: Chipwrecked ($14 million)
#5: The Adventures of Tintin ($12.8 million)
#6: The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo ($11.5 million)
#7: We Bought A Zoo ($10.5 million)
#8: The Darkest Hour ($8.2 million)
#9: The Muppets ($3.7 million)
#10: New Year's Eve ($3.4 million)
