Friday Box Office Report: Year To End on High Note with "Mission Impossible IV" Leading...

Box office is looking to be up from the end of last year...all films saw upticks from last weekend...

Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol is holding onto the lead, with a 12% bump to an estimated $10.7 million over its' second weekend.  The film became the 28th film to cross the $100 million mark domestically yesterday and based on recent trajectories, the film will likely be headed for a $32 million three-day, and because Monday is a holiday as well, it should see a 4-day frame of around $42 million.

Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows also saw a solid Friday, up 8% to an estimated $7.6 million, and the film became the 27th film to cross the $100 million mark domestically on Wednesday.  Looking at recent trajectories, a $23 million 3-day and $32 million 4-day are currently looking like solid targets.

Continuing as the top choice for families, Alvin & The Chipmunks: Chipwrecked enjoyed a solid 22% bump to an estimated $7.1 million.  At this moment, a $21 million 3-day and $27 million 4-day are expected which should be enough to catapult it past the $100 million mark domestically.

The only dark thriller in theaters, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo saw a 13% bump in fourth place to an estimated $5.3 million, and is likely headed for a $14 million 3-day and $19 million 4-day.  The biggest headline was how well We Bought A Zoo held up, jumping up a spot to fifth place and up a massive 49% to an estimated $4.9 million, and is benefiting from solid word of mouth.  This should help it leap-frog into the fourth spot with a $15 million 3-day and $20 million 4-day.

Steven Spielberg's two holiday flicks followed in sixth and seventh.  Following its' impressive debut on Christmas Day, War Horse is looking more front-loaded, as it earned an estimated $4.7 million on its' first official Friday.  Right now, it looks more like a $14 million 3-day and $18 million 4-day.  Meanwhile, The Adventures of Tintin saw a nice family bump, up 21% to an estimated $4.4 million, and is expecting a $13 million 3-day along with a $17 million 4-day.

With the holiday upon us, New Year's Eve saw a signifigant jump as well.  Advancing 40% to an estimated $2.3 million, the film will also see the strongest Friday-to-Sunday multiplier, which could result in a $7 million 3-day, but a $9 million 4-day as grosses will start going downward after the holiday.  The other film seeing its' first official weekend, The Darkest Hour, performed more like Skyline with just an estimated $1.6 million, in what likely will be just a $4 million 3-day and $5.5 million 4-day.

Tied for the tenth spot are The Descendants and The Muppets with estimates of $1.1 million each, but we should easily expect Jim Henson's characters to jump ahead over the weekend with over $3 million in 3 days and $4.5 million in four.

Here is the projected Top 10:
