Movie Review: Dolphin Tale

Rating:  1/2
Grade: A
Score: 9.2/10
Family-Friendliness Scale: Level 5 (Recommended)
Kids ages 5+

Dolphin Tale is based on the inspiring true story of Winter the Dolphin (who plays herself in the movie), who has her tail amputated after being caught in a crabtrap.  But the impossible is made possible as a prosthetic tail is invented for her and ends up inspiring other people with disabilities.

Positive Notes

The film offers strong positive messages about family, friendship and never giving up.  There is also some educational value this film offers about marine science and classification of marine animals.  Sawyer Nelson (played by Nathan Gamble) learns to come out of his shell and make friends on his own since his Dad left him five years ago and his cousin Kyle, his role model, has been sent into the army.  Kyle later comes home discouraged because of his disability of a stiff leg and arm, but Dr. McCarthy (played by Morgan Freeman)  says to him "mentally you are hurt, but you're not broken" as a reference to saying that he shouldn't give up, and continue living his life.  It also is wonderfully acted, not just Gamble and Freeman, but with Harry Connick, Jr., Kris Kristofferson, and Ashley Judd as well.  And the character of Rufus the pelican adds some hilarious comic relief to the dramatic scenes.  Mark Isham provides a solid music score.

Negative Notes

Sawyer skips school without his Mom knowing.  The films' sharpest dialogue would be one use each of "heck", "darn" and "crappy".

While not necessarily negative, there are some moments that may upset younger/sensitive viewers.

Conclusion

Heartwarming, dramatic, and cleverly-told, Dolphin Tale is one of the best movies I've seen in recent memory.  One of those rare family gems that is excellent in every way.
