Friday Box Office: "Puss" Solid but Unspectacular, "Paranormal" Cascades, "In Time" Performs As Expected....

The official projections are in, and box office still looks to be up at least 20% from last year...

Puss in Boots didn't quite lift DreamWorks out of their slump, as it earned an estimated $9.8 million on Friday.  That was close to Rio's $10.3 million first Friday and a bit ahead of Rango's $9.1 million Friday.  Both films would benefit from family bumps on Saturday and would earn $39.2 and $38.1 million on their opening weekends.  Based on recent animated films, Puss should come in between those numbers, with a weekend of $38.5 million, but could reach $40 million if the bump is much bigger.

Meanwhile, Paranormal Activity 3 cascaded from its' record-breaking debut last weekend, plummeting 72% from last Friday to an estimated $7.3 million, and is looking for a $19 million second weekend, and bringing its' total to $82 million in 10 days.

Justin Timberlake's sci-fi drama In Time debuted modestly in third, with an estimate of $4.5 million on Friday, and will likely reach analysts' predictions of $12-$13 million for the weekend.  That's on par with both stars' tracking records.

Meanwhile, Johnny Depp's The Rum Diary bottomed out with an estimated $1.7 million, and slotted in fifth place.  It will probably end up with a weekend of a disappointing $5.5 million.  That's too bad, considering the fact that Depp is extremely popular and distributor FilmDistrict had been doing so well this year.

In holdover terms, the remake of Footloose finally leaped ahead of Real Steel.  The dance drama eased 45% from last Friday to an estimated $2 million and will finish the weekend with $6 million.  The boxing robots dropped around 45% from last Friday to an estimated $1.7 million, and will likely end up with $5.5 million, where it will fight for fifth place with Depp's Rum Diary.  Meanwhile, The Three Musketeers benefited from mediocre reception, dropping 61% to an estimated $1.1 million, and will fall short of $4 million for its' second weekend.

Here is the projected Top 10 (updated):

#1: Puss in Boots ($38.6 million)
#2: Paranormal Activity 3 ($19.4 million, -64%)
#3: In Time ($13.8 million)
